Top 10 Things You Never Thought You'd Need - But Will!
You've got your clothes, computer, stereo, music, posters, sheets, a pillow, school supplies, alarm clock, a few pots and pans, and some furniture.

That's everything, right? Maybe not - consider the following must haves for apartment dwellers:

  • Flashlight - Be prepared in case of power outages - a flashlight in an easy-to-find place is a must-have. $3
  • Fire Extinguisher - Think a fire extinguisher is something you can do without? Think again. If there's a fire in the kitchen, cigarette burning on the couch, or the computer's in flames, an type ABC fire extinguisher is a good thing to have around. $15-20
  • Can Opener - You'll need a can opener one of these days, whether it's for opening soup or your favorite can of brussel sprouts. $1
  • Charcoal Grill - Have a patio, balcony, or porch? Then you should be grilling out! And, since gas grills are illegal for use on apartment patios and balconies, a charcoal powered portable grill is your best bet. From $10
  • Cleaning Supplies - Whether you're a clean freak or just need to clean up after a successful Homecoming party, you'll need cleaning supplies. Make Mom proud -- use them.
  • Extra light bulbs - Since this is your first apartment, you probably have never needed to have extra light bulbs laying around. Most bulbs in your apartment are probably of the same type. Buy a pack for backup! $2 for four bulbs
  • Extension Cords - Power outlets never seem to be close enough. Extension cords make apartment dwelling much more convenient.
  • Tools - An inexpensive tool kit will come in handy. Be sure the one you pick includes a hammer, pliers, and philips and standard screwdrivers. $15
  • Hand-held Steam Vac - Available now for around $25, a hand-held steam vac makes spot cleaning furniture and carpets a breeze.
  • Extra Chairs - Plan on having a few people over? Or, what if your parents drop by? Extra seating means no one sits on the floor. Try outdoor patio furniture that can stack on the balcony, in a closet, or in the corner.
